Why All Christians Must Keep The Sabbath Day Holy

Bible Study

Please note before reading: Biblical evidence that points to the Roman Catholic Church will be presented. However, It is not any person that is under attack, but the system of Catholicism itself is that is being scrutinized. And in all cases, evidence (Biblical & historical) will be presented supporting any claims made. Thus there won't be slander for the sake of slander.

Let’s read first the Catechism of the Catholic Church about the Sabbath day. Remember the Catholic Church removed the second commandment and in order to get ten they split the ninth into two in order to get ten. Due to this change, they had to rearrange and hence renumbered the commandments. The biblical Sabbath commandment is the fourth not the third.

  1. What is the Third Commandment?
    A. The third Commandment is: Remember thour keep holy the Sabbath day.
  2. Which is the Sabbath day?
    A. Saturday is the Sabbath day.
  3. Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?
    A. We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday."
    [ The Convert's Catechism of Catholic Doctrine, 1951 printing, page 50. ]

From the above Q &A the Catholic Church admits that Saturday is the biblical Sabbath day and they are absolutely correct! And why is this issue so important? Because it’s about POWER and we see why when we read the following:

6. How prove you that the Church hath power to command feasts and holy days?

A. By the very act of changing the Sabbath into Sunday which Protestants allow of; and therefore THEY FONDLY CONTRADICT THEMSELVES, BY KEEPING SUNDAY STRICTLY, and breaking most other feasts commanded by the same church."
[ Henry Tubervill, An Abridgment of the Christian Doctrine, 1833, page 58. ]

There are only two powers in the world; The Lord God Jesus Christ in his Church and the Dragon in the Roman Catholic System.

More from the Catholic sources to illustrate that every word in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be confirmed:

"You will tell men that Saturday was the Jewish Sabbath, but that the Christian Sabbath has been changed to Sunday. Changed! but by whom? Who has authority to change an express commandment of Almighty God? When God has spoken and said, Thou Shalt keep holy the seventh day, who shall dare say, Nay, thou mayest work and do all manner of worldly business on the seventh day; but thou shalt keep holy the first day in its stead. This is a most important question which I know not how you can answer.

"You are a Protestant, and you profess to go by the Bible and the Bible only; and yet in so important a matter as the observance of one day in seven as a holy day, you go against the plain letter of the Bible, and put another day in the place of the day which the Bible has commanded. The command to keep holy the seventh day is one of the ten commandments; you believe that the other nine are still binding: who gave you authority to tamper with the fourth? If you are consistent with your own principles, if you really follow the Bible and the Bible only, you ought to be able to produce some portion of the New Testament in which this fourth commandment is expressly altered." [ Library of Christian Doctrine. Why Don't You Keep Holy the Sabbath Day? page 5. ]

"Finally, at the last opening on the eighteenth of January 1562, all hesitation was set aside. The Archbishop of Reggio made a speech in which he openly declared that tradition stood above scripture. The authority of the church could therefore not be bound to the authority of the Scriptures, because the church had changed... Sabbath into Sunday, not by the command of Christ, but by its own authority."
[ Heinrich Julius Holtzmann, Kanon und Tradition (Ludwigsburg: Druck and Verlag von Ferd Riehm), 1859, page 263 in the German ]

And this is the main question:

  1. Who has authority to change an express commandment of the almighty God?

And to the Protestant, the hierarchy of the Catholic Church demands this:

2. Who gave you authority to tamper with the fourth? If you really follow the Bible and the Bible only, you ought to be able to produce some portion of the New Testament in which this fourth commandment is expressly altered!

I can categorically say that throughout the history of the church and from the very beginning of creation, there has never been a change of the Sabbath day to this very day! The hierarchy of the Catholic Church is right, there’s no evidence by the Lord Himself or His apostles. Hence I agree with the hierarchy of the Catholic Church that they are right on point as per the scriptures of truth. The Roman Church system is the Beast of Revelation Chapter 13. A beast in the Bible is a kingdom:

Daniel 7:23 (KJV) - "Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth..."

Revelation 13:4 (KJV) "And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?"

The Dragon is the devil who gave power to the Roman Catholic system. The only one who can make war with the beast power is the Lord God Jesus Christ who dwells in and among His people.

Salvation is not limited-to Seventh-day Adventists, nor will doing anything like keeping a particular Sabbath give you salvation; and there are now other religious groups that keep the Saturday Sabbath as well. The Lord Jesus Christ commanded His disciples and those who believed the message of the gospel after them to preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15 and Matthew 28:20 - KJV). The true disciple and the true Church is to - "teach them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen."

Keeping the Sabbath does not give anyone salvation because salvation is a gift but the Sabbath is not. Then why should the Protestant keep it? Because the Lord Jesus commanded to teach the seventh day Sabbath is to be kept. Why does the hierarchy of the Catholic Church make such a fuss about the Protestants not keeping it if they believe the bible? Because they know the Sabbath is a commandment like all the other nine and the hierarchy of the Catholic Church is well aware it was never abolished. The Protestants should keep Holy the Sabbath day because it is sin not to keep it. Sin is the transgression of the law as stated in:

1 John 3:4 (KJV) - "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law."
Therefore not keeping the Sabbath (which never was abolished) is transgression of the law in the same vain as worshipping an idol.

Ezekiel 20:38 (KJV) - "And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the Lord."

Revelation 22:14 (KJV) - "Blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."

The hierarchy of the Catholic Church removed the second commandment and this omission is calculated in order to enforce and encourage the worship of idols in all their strongholds. This act is rebellion against the God of Heaven and an abomination. The second commandment like all the others, are for God’s people the standard for the Christian walk.

Keeping the seventh day Sabbath holy to the protestant church is the acknowledgement of God’s authority and power over all His creation.
