Sin is the transgression of the law – 1 John 3:4. God made rules which must be obeyed if we are to live in peace with him. The law of God is his character and therefore to know him and what he requires of us, we must be acquainted with his law and obeyed it.
We are sinners because we do not keep his law. If we hate our brother or sister for instance we are murderers in the eyes of God. In order to be forgiven of such a sin then we must repent i.e. change our ways and ask the Lord Jesus to help us to do what is right and deliver us from the evil of our ways.
Romans 3:10, 23 (KJV) - As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one; For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Daniel 9:11 (KJV) - Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.
None of us can claim to be righteous or good. We were all born in iniquity – Psalm 51:5. In other words, we were born without a sense of obligation or responsibility which is lawlessness.
Sin nature is perfectly captured by Jeremiah when he asks the following question:
Jeremiah 13:23 (KJV) - Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.
It’s impossible for a leopard to change his spots because they are parmanent. God compares those who are accustomed to doing evil to the leopard’s spots. You must therefore agree it would take a miracle to remove the spots on a leopard: And that is the miracle and the gift of forgiveness of sin.
Isaiah 1:18 (KJV) ...though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
And to those who receive forgiveness David says:
Psalm 32:1 (KJV) Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
John 1:29 (KJV) ... Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
1 Peter 2:24 (KJV) Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
Eph 1:7 (KJV) In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Col 1:14 (KJV) In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Heb 9:12 (KJV) Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
The Holy Spirit
He is the power gift given to those who receive Jesus Christ and believe in his name - John 1:12.
He empowers us to live the Christian life of service to God and man
Acts 1:8 (KJV) But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
1 Cor 12:7 (KJV) But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
Jesus Christ promised to send the Holy Spirit to those who’ve believed in him.
John 14: 15-18 (KJV) If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
John 16:7-17 (KJV) Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
Lord Jesus Christ, I have transgressed your law by my actions, words and thoughts. I am willing to change. I come to you today by faith asking for the forgiveness of my sins. I now understand you oppose the proud but gives grace to the humble. I therefore humbly submit to your Lordship to obey your Word from this day forward. Wash me thoroughly from my sin with your blood. I believe with my heart that you died and after three days and three nights you rose again from the dead: And with my mouth I confess you as my Lord and Saviour. This is the faith that overcomes the world of sin – I believe Jesus Christ is the Son Of God. AMEN.
