WHY WORSHIP WITH US?
1 Corinthians 2:4-5 King James Version (KJV)
And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
We go all the way back to the Apostolic Church and connect to such words of truth as above. To such men as Paul an apostle of our Lord and the twelve who authored the New Testament in its entirety under the power and skill of the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 2:20 King James Version (KJV) - And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
The foundation here means the teaching or doctrines they espoused. The church or the body of Christ is a building (1 Peter 2:5; 1 Cor 3:9) and every building must have a proper foundation if it were to stand and fit for purpose. The cornerstone forms the base of a corner of a building, joining two walls. What we understand is the apostles and prophets pointed to Christ Jesus alone upon whom the whole structure (Church) finds its perfection.
The Old Testament and the New Testament walls are joined in perfect sync by the corner stone. It’s this seamless union of the old and the new which forms the church ….
Matthew 13:52 King James Version (KJV) - Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old. A scribe is a teacher of doctrine and this refers to those Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers (Eph 4:11).
We cannot therefore as the church of Jesus Christ deviate from the very apostolic teachings written after the resurrection and ascension of the Lord: To do so is reckless and suicidal.
Jesus Christ said of John the Baptist:
Matthew 11:13 King James Version (KJV) - For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. Thus the Old Testament (the law and the prophets) which pointed to Christ Jesus are witnessed by John when he pointed out the very messiah and saviour and said:
John 1:29 King James Version (KJV) – “ ……Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
THE 10 COMMANDMENTS
Mark 10:17-22 King James Version (KJV)
“And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.”
The question posed by the man in this episode of the Mark’s gospel is the all important question: What shall I do to inherit Eternal Life?
The Good Lord and our God Jesus Christ pointed the man to the 10 commandments. And when Jesus saw the man adhered to the second tablet of the Decalogue, HE LOVED HIM.
I know the reader may be quick to point me to the cross and the death blood and the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the fact that it’s by grace that we are save and works of the law has nothing to do with it and I agree.
However, there are two kinds of works: (i) Ceremonial, and (ii) Moral.
The cross and the death of Christ Jesus is ceremonial in that it’s the means by which we were reconciled to God and justified freely by His grace. This is the same thing the Jew had to do on the Day of Atonement in order to be forgiven for the transgression of the law. This act was repeated every 7th Month on the 10th Day of the month every year. The death of Jesus abolished this repetition once and for all. We must not forget that the reason why the Day of Atonement was repeated was because the law was transgressed and that required the death of the transgressor. Instead, God provided the Lamb as a means of redemption from the curse of the law which was death and restored fellowship with man once again because the blood of the Lamb reconciled them who were enemies of God by transgression.
Hence Paul the Apostles makes reference to those in Christ Jesus (atoned for by the blood of Christ Jesus) as without condemnation:
Romans 8:1 King James Version (KJV) - There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
In Christ Jesus we are forgiven and therefore not condemned. However, Paul qualifies that those not condemned walk after the Spirit and not after the flesh. Why not after the flesh? Because the flesh acts contrary to the Spirit and the works of the flesh are revealed as transgression of the law as follows:
Galatians 5:19-21 King James Version (KJV) - Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
When we look at the works of the flesh, we see it’s the transgression or breaking the law of the 10 commandments; adultery, idolatry, murder, etc.
Now you see why Jesus loved the man and why only those who keep the commandments actually walk after the Spirit?
The Spirit is the Spirit of truth. And what is truth? (a) Thy Word is truth – Jn 17:17, (b) Thy law is truth – Ps 119:142, (c) all thy commandments are truth – Ps 119:151.
After Jesus saved the woman caught in adultery from the curse of the law (death) He said to her go and sin no more, in other words do not transgress my law again. Her salvation from death was by grace but He subjects her to the law immediately after her salvation for the rest of her life. This is the relationship between grace and law.
A people who are subject to the law walks in the demonstration and power through the gifts of the Spirit.
The Sabbath is therefore Saturday not Sunday and it’s to be kept for all time by the true remnant church!
Revelation 22:14 King James Version (KJV) – “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.”
